Tyler Mitchell

Photographer, Filmmaker

Born in 1995 in Atlanta. Graduated from New York University Tisch School of the Arts. In 2018, he made history as the first African-American photographer to shoot a cover for American Vogue for Beyoncé’s appearance in the September issue. He shot campaign visuals for “UNIQLO and JW ANDERSON”.

These are my good luck socks. Plain and simple. Whenever I put them on I can do no wrong. Everyone has their good luck socks. And these from UNIQLO are mine. Every six months I’ll go into the store in SoHo and stockpile on the newest colours. I love these in particular because they’re the perfect shade of coral pink. I like putting pink into my pictures. Make it fresher. Gives the pictures life. I’ll wear the socks with cropped black chino trousers and either low top skate shoes or brogues. When getting dressed, I always start with socks first. That’s gotta come before the underwear and everything else. It’s the foundation, the base layer, the soft padding between you and the ground. I like that idea. Like cloud nine. I want people to see the hint of colour and life popping out on my ankles just a bit. Black socks are boring to me. Why not make ’em pink? Have fun loosen up. I’m an artist so there are no rules for me. Today it might be these tomorrow it might be some lime green ones. The day after? It might be some mustard yellow ones. But never boring black. People have to see some colour on my ankles for it to be Tyler Mitchell. There’s a streamlined simplicity too that makes it work with my lifestyle. I want something I don’t have to think too much about. At the end of the day, socks need to be functional. And these are.
