What Are Timeless Tones?

Basic and timeless items, always evolving.
What are the best ways to give them a modern touch?
Here are seven tips gleaned from the pages of the magazine.

  • Tonal Colours

This Fall & Winter collection was inspired by the colour palettes of two cities: Edinburgh, Scotland, a city of cobblestone streets and stone buildings in cool grays and beiges; and Stockholm, Sweden, a place of modern architecture, surrounded by a countryside of off-whites and greens. By drawing from a gradation of basic colours, you can build a modern wardrobe that makes matching tones a simple task.

  • Neutral Accents

How should accent colours work in a tonal outfit? There’s more to it than pop. This season, try adding a gentler nuance. If you’re in the city, this could mean a cool and clean tone like ice blue, while in the country or the outdoors, a warmer pastel pink could do the trick.

  • Wide and Tight

Wide pants, a classic, are also in this season. This fall, wide silhouettes can be found in everything from women’s chinos to slacks and sweatpants. A tighter top, like a compact vest, balances things off nicely. Keeping things tonal gives the outfit an unbeatable A-line form.

  • Authentic Meets Casual

An authentic and timeless coat can of course be worn over a suit of the same colour, but works just as well over a casual outfit. Try with an AIRism sweatsuit in tonal colours, or a basic hoodie and selvedge jeans for a clean dressed-down look. It’s also fun to layer different textures like wool blends and cotton.

  • Denim on denim

For several years, perspectives on workwear have taken a modern turn, especially in Europe. Combine a work-inspired item like this trucker jacket with outdoor fashions, and you have a new style for the city. The clean white of this denim top and bottom, a classic workwear outfit, gets a burst of freshness from this woodsy buffalo check.

  • Mix and Match

Edinburgh is an old, small city with several universities and a large number of students. These trendsetters style traditional items like tweed and tartan check as if they were streetwear or mix sportswear with trad, creating all sorts of unexpected synergies. In the same spirit, we tried pairing a PUFFTECH long coat with a tweed skort. The different materials and silhouettes give the outfit depth and freshness.
