Picasso and UT

UNIQLO has collaborated with the Estate of Pablo Picasso on a collection of art print T-shirts. Through UT, select works by the greatest artist of the twentieth century will reach a new global audience.

Pablo PicassoArtist

Painter, sculptor, and printmaker born in Málaga, Spain. In 1900 at age nineteen, Picasso made his first visit to Paris, where he was based from 1904 through the 1940s. In this city of art and culture, he made the acquaintances of Henri Matisse and Georges Braque, who vastly influenced his creative practice. Paris is also where he spent his formative “Blue Period” and “Rose Period” and became known as a founder of the Cubist movement which fundamentally revamped the way that objects are perceived. Historic feats like Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Guernica combine creative spirit and political messaging into a form that is quintessentially Picasso. His endless search for new modes of expression led him beyond the world of painting into the realms of sculpture, ceramics, literature and music, leaving a deep impression across the whole of modern art.

A Unique Handle on Reality

No artist revolutionized the twentieth-century art world more than Pablo Picasso. This collection consists of four UT shirts featuring works made in the richly creative period spanning the 1920s through the 1940s, as well as a PEACE FOR ALL charitable T-shirt designed in the spirit of world peace. All of these T-shirts demonstrate Picasso’s ability to convey the basic themes of everyday life in captivating ways through rich emotional expressions. His iconic Dove came to be known globally as a symbol of the postwar peace movement, evoking the grace and persistence of the pacifist cause. Transcending the framework of art, this work conveys a powerful message to this day. The shirts in the photos brilliantly capture the light touch of his sketches and the dynamics of the paint, elements that make a strong visual impact on the mind. Our hope is that fans of Picasso and lovers of fashion alike will derive joy from wearing these great works of art.

White Doves Entrusted to me
by My Friend Matisse

Dove of Peace

1949. A white dove symbolizing peace. Picasso had a lifelong affinity for doves, which his art teacher father raised when he was young. Gracing the back cover of the current issue, this dove’s bold lines and gentle expression make a deep impression on the viewer.

The Dove of Peace is such an iconic image by my father Pablo Picasso. Following the huge admiration for his visceral anti-war painting ‘Guernica', Picasso had been set the task to come up with an image for the World Peace Congress in 1949. As it happens, Matisse who needed to go back to Paris for a few days asked my father if he could keep his two pigeons which would have been cumbersome to carry all the way to Paris and back. My father, fascinated by the sight of the white pigeons which reminded him of his childhood in Andalusia, couldn’t resist depicting them.

When the day came to deliver the poster for the World Peace Congress in 1949, it became clear that it could become the symbol of the event. The pre-opening event coincided with the day of my birth. When choosing a name for me with my mother they came up with Paloma. I often say the most beautiful gift I ever received is my name, which means dove in Spanish.
The simplicity of the image has made it unforgettable among Picasso’s many works. Although for me it will always represent the special bond between father and daughter, the dove drawing still resonates today as the embodiment of altruism, freedom and peace, something that we should all strive for in life.

Paloma PicassoClothing and Jewelry Designer

Daughter of artists Pablo Picasso and Françoise Gilot. Born in 1949 in Boulogne, near Paris. Early experiences with drawing gave way to a career in fashion. Paloma’s jewelry designs have won wide acclaim for their bold use of color and form. Her signature perfumes display a natural talent, from the bottles to the packaging.

Four Parisian Artists
and Picasso's Work

Oskar FougeirolStudent at École des Beaux-Arts

Paris-based artist Oskar Fougeirol is the son of artists Thomas Fougeirol and Nathalie Lété. Early influence from his parents helped him develop a unique sensibility. Currently he studies art at Ecole des Beaux Arts, the alma mater of such legendary figures as Claude Monet. At his studio, Oskar creates installations fusing mixed media like sculpture, photo and video. “Picasso’s paintings are great of course, but I’m quite fond of his ceramics. The collection housed at the Picasso Museum in Antibes has plates with food scrawled into them. The colors and designs are really beautiful.” Pictured at work in the Dove of Peace UT, Oskar brings to mind Picasso in his younger days.

Angele FougeirolCeramic Artist, Model

Oskar’s older sister Angele has for the past few years worked as an assistant for their mother Nathalie Lété, while making time to create her own ceramics. “Since both our parents were artists, we got to see Picasso’s works at museums in Paris and all over the world when we were kids. Still, I’d never seen the painting on this T-shirt. I’m glad I had the chance to learn about this incredible painting.” A few years back, Angele was inspired to cut her hair short by a Picasso painting. “I loved the short hairstyle on the girl in Young Acrobat on a Ball, so I got the same one.” Another fan of Picasso’s ceramics, Angele has the poise of a figure from a painting.

Nephtali Zaya BongiStudent at École des Beaux-Arts

Nephtali is a frequent collaborator of Oskar’s. As serious as he may look holding a brush before his picture, when asked about Picasso, his face relaxed. “Picasso was a pioneer who never stopped searching for new ways to express himself. Paris is a city that loves art. Everybody here knows Picasso and loves his work. We’re proud that the city’s home to the Musée National Picasso.” The print on the back of Nephtali’s shirt is the Portrait of Marie-Thérèse Walter, held by the Paris museum. “Keeping the shirt untucked and rolling up the jeans to show the colored socks gives the outfit a streetwear feel.”

Noemi LenemanStudent at École des Beaux-Arts

Noemi is a gifted young artist studying performance art with a focus on creating video and objects. We asked her about the enduring appeal of Picasso, who shared her affinity for performance, as shown by the costumes, scenery and sets that he created for the 1917 ballet Parade. “Recently at the Guggenheim in New York, I was blown away by Le Moulin de la Galette, which Picasso painted on his first visit to Paris in 1900. The lively dancehall atmosphere conveys how strong of an impression life in Paris must have made on Picasso at the time. ” Pablo Picasso left an indelible mark on the world of art. As this artist of the future performed her work, you could almost see the Woman with Hat on her UT shirt smiling.
